Gay Drinking with Carlos: Where Kabaklaan Meets Craft Cocktails in Davao

Taste of Abode is an establishment in itself. As a youth, visiting Matina Town Square came with a specific routine: the playground first, and then Taste of Home for mallow bars and pastries while my parents chatted over coffee. I grew out of the monkey bars, but the Taste of House habit stuck. The place remains warm, nostalgic, and familiar.

And on one rainy June afternoon, it became the setting for something new.

That day, I was there not just for sweets and memories but for a story: one I’ve been meaning to write since I first experienced Gay Drinking with Carlos at last year’s Davao Food and Wine Festival. I had heard the buzz long before then—how Carlos Mangcupang’s boozy explorations were making waves in the food scene not just for entity inventive, but also undeniably, unapologetically queer. When I finally tasted his cocktails, it clicked. These weren’t just drinks. They were declarations.

Bt: Where the boys are in Davao City

“The party ends at AM,” said Davao City-based NGO worker Mel, who agreed to party with us on my last night before heading out of the “durian republic”. “So says the manager, who said so said (Mayor Rodrigo) Duterte…”

We were in this small-ish MSM bar – with transwoman Jopay and self-identified bi Prime from Davao City’s Deaf LGBT group – somewhere along Jacinto Extension. Not too hard to find, if you know where you’re headed; though easy to miss, nonetheless, if you aren’t looking for it.

This is Bt, where – as Mel said – Davao City’s surpass looking and (this one’s important) “attitude-less” MSM hang out to be with “other PLUs (people like us).”

Ask any (self-respecting) Davao City-based gay or bi male, and he’d surely perceive where Bt is.  This is because the “original” venue opened over 10 years ago, making this place the only such bar to exist this long.  But this place has undergone numerous incarnations, though (despite the constant re-birth, and under diverse ownerships and managements at that, too) it is still widely known
