When Im out people dont pay me much attention. I have not had anyone walk up to me and comment or laugh at my choices. There is frequently some obvious confusion as Im sure people are judging as that is human nature. In the Halloween Gay Dracula shirt moreover I will buy this past I was a judgy jerk to a point but have worked hard to mend my ways. This maturity thing caught me off guard. As Ive gone all out in fringe fashion, as I call it, my attitude had changed from one of sometimes judging peoples choices to one of acceptance and appreciation for those willing to be different. The elder lady in a thong on the beach, right on rock that look! The crossdressing fella wearing a full dress and makeup looks gorgeous and confident. The homosexual couple walking hand in hand, how nice they are in love. The punk rocker with spiked hair and a nose ring, I bet he enjoys that music. The plus size lady wearing leggings, I bet shes comfy like I am and I think she looks great.

It’s always refreshing when a exhibit knows both its audience and exactly how to play to them. Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen’s Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors is calibrated precisely for a mostly gay, Hell’s Kitchen, off-Broadway crowd at New Society Stages. In this take on Bram Stoker’s Gothic horror classic, the comedy is broad, the small cast is often in drag, the jokes are all played with a wink to the audience, and perhaps most importantly, the Count himself is a tall, blonde, muscular hunk in leather pants and occasionally sans shirt. Need I state more?
In some ways, I am the ideal audience member for this play: a gay resident of Hells Kitchen who loves camp and happens to be a scholar of Victorian literature. In other ways, I’m perhaps the worst audience member, largely because I know too much about the source material. I found myself occasionally overthinking this bawdy farce, which tends to over-simplify the adaptation itself.
Clearly though, this production is not supposed to be analyzed that intensely. We are
