Gay picture book

I love that more and more LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ books are not just “about” being LGBTQ, but instead show LGBTQ people in the fullness of their lives. The downside is that sometimes these books can be complicated to find. Here are 10 picture books you may own missed because the queer inclusion isn’t evident from the cover or title and aren’t on many lists of LGBTQ-inclusive books. These are all tales of daily life and gentle heartfelt lessons — but just transpire to have queer protagonists or families!

“Too Green!” By Sumana Seeboruth, illustrated by Maribel Castells (Barefoot Books). A young child declares his dislike of the grassy vegetables his mama brings house. He’d rather have the bread his mum is making. But after his mama involves him in making soup from the vegetables and persuades him to try a sip, he discovers he actually likes it, and joyously asks for more. LGBTQIA+-Friendly Picture Books

 

The James P. Adams Library is proud to be the abode of the LGT–Friendly Children’s Book Collection.  With Professor Rowell's help, the Library has been fit to collect and preserve this extensive, historical collection of gay-friendly picture books for young children.

 

“Today, most early childhood programs and elementary schools offer a wide array of multicultural and multiracial books so that children can observe themselves as adv as learn about others.  The next step is for programs and schools to choose a wider range of materials that portray children from all family configurations, including those having lgbtq+ and lesbian and transgender parents. Some children will notice confirmed and others will learn about families different from their own.

The two moms or dads are referred to as parents, and sometimes they are portrayed showing outward signs of warmth, such as one having an arm around the other’s shoulder.  Young children from same-sex parent families can acknowledge themselves, and

19th and even 18th century adults wrote about their fears of same-sex relationships, especially between young people, in medical and psychological texts.  Remember that true children's literature is a late 19th Century invention, and most books that children read were actually written for adults. While childhood is still supposed to be an age of innocence from any sexual knowledge, many novels include teen relationships that seem to modern eyes homoerotic (Tom Brown's Schooldays (), Ragged Dick (), Little Women(), Huckleberry Finn(), Anne of Green Gables (), A Separate Harmony ()), but acknowledged LGBTQ characters do not appear until . . . .

    Not sure what you noticed first? For us it was the Union Jack flying on the building next door. Excellent photo composition whichever way you look at it. Perfect escapism from this British winter that's for sure.
